Yr 5 primary school children in Oldham are inspired by businesses and colleges to start thinking about their futures
Over 1000 Yr 5 students from primary schools across Oldham attended the Careers Fair held at Mahdlo Youth Zone on 27th March 2019, where they had the chance to engage with over 40 businesses, colleges and apprenticeship providers from a wide range of industry sectors.
The event was organised by Oldham Schools Business and Community Hub and Careers and Enterprise specialists Mploy Solutions Ltd and was supported by Oldham Enterprise Trust (OET).
The children got really involved as exhibitors brought along interactive activities to bring to life some of the future options, jobs and careers open them in the future.
Alison Leigh, Headteacher at Delph Primary School and co-leader of the Oldham Schools Business and Community Hub said “ The children gained a great deal from the day and really enjoyed it .It is very important that Primary School pupils have the opportunity to think about their futures and career aspirations, particularly before they move on to secondary school. Pupils were able to speak to a variety of employers, learning about different careers and educational pathways”.
Caroline Ireland, Headteacher at St Thomas Leesfield Primary School, also co-leader said,
“It is a fantastic opportunity for our Yr 5 students to consider what jobs are out there. It has helped the children to think about what skills they require in the future and see the range of exciting future options for them.
Kashif Ashraf from OET, added, “It’s great for OET to be able to support this successful event again. Having a real mix of local and national organisations provides the children with a great opportunity to find out about different jobs and careers, in an interactive and engaging way that could potentially be available to them in the future.”
Norma Guest, Managing Director of Mploy Solutions, who organised the event, said “Its fantastic to see so many primary school students really excited about careers and thinking about what skills they need to develop for the future”
The event, now in its fifth year was a huge success and all involved are looking forward to another event next year.
